Sand has been used as a filter media.  This was improved with the introduction of Zeolite (also known as ZelBrite, ZeoPlus and other various names),  This is a mineral rock media used in the filtration sequence.
 
Developed by Poolrite Equipment Pty Ltd there is a smarter alternative to both sand and Zeolite: Diamond Kleen.
